AUSTRALIA’S NUMBER 1 NANNY
My name is Philippa Christian, but most people call be Pip. It’s so exciting to be writing for Findababysitter.com and I feel very fortunate to be able to share with you some of the ups and downs I’ve experienced while spending my days and nights as a babysitter and nanny. It has been, and still is, for me the only job I have ever had where I feel like I’m not at work! In fact how many people are lucky enough to be paid while enjoying themselves thoroughly every day!?
A bit about me. I started babysitting when I was eleven years old; I am the eldest of four; I love to shop; I love to keep other people’s houses spotlessly clean BUT you really would not want to see my own bedroom at the moment; always making plans to go to the gym but never quite getting there and most important of all, love chocolate. Who doesn’t?!
I’d like to tell you about what happened to me a few weeks ago. It was about 3.30 pm and I was on my way home from the station. It’s not a long walk but I have to pass a school and I had timed it ‘perfectly’. There must have been hundreds of girls in the same uniform I used to wear flooding out of the gates and heading for the station to get their train – yes, we were on a collision course. To prepare myself I held my bag tightly and put my head down and started to march. As we got closer, I heard my name being screamed out at the top of someone’s lungs. I looked up and just had time to catch a glimpse of a happy, smiling face before I was locked in the strongest bear hug I’d ever experienced. She obviously knew who I was and even though her voice was very familiar, I had no idea who this lovely tall and ‘very strong’ girl was! ‘It’s me Pip, don’t you remember me? I’m Laura! You used to babysit me and my sister when we were little!’
Lots of girls brushed past us as we talked about ‘the good old days’ and it made me think how lucky I’d been to be a part of so many children’s lives. Laura had grown up and was now in secondary school but we talked and laughed as if there had been no time in between and after swapping mobile numbers, we decided that the friendships made between babysitters and the children they care for are very special as they are based on trust and respect and last forever.
Have you ever experienced a similar situation to this? We would love to know!
